A Week At McNair High School

The week of October 27th, McNair High School students enrolled in Family and Consumer Science classes will be offered a taste of opportunities available in food and urban agriculture as organized by the East Atlanta Village Farmers Market. The week includes an urban farm tour, cooking and nutrtion, herbs, value-added products and music production. A grant from the Community Foundation of Greater Atlanta makes this program possible. Monday, October 27th: Urban Farm Tour

Gaia Gardens is a five-acre organic farm in East Lake, approximately three miles from McNair High School. The farm is completing its ninth growing season. Students will learn about small-scale organic farming as they see first hand the vegetables, flowers, herbs and fruits that are grown and sold to the community.

 

 

 

Tuesday, October 28th: In the Kitchen with Afya Ibomu

Students will prepare two different recipes featuring Georgia produce currently in season. Afya Ibomu is a Certified Holistic Health Counselor, AADP. She has served as Erykah Badu's nutritionist on tour and previously owned and operated a catering business in Brooklyn, NY. Her third book, The Vegan Soulfood Guide to the Galaxy, will be released November 3rd, 2008. Afya is also the founder and editor of her monthly online magazine, Nattral.

 

 

 

Wednesday, October 29th: Making a Healthy Profit with Herbs

Kyla Zaro Moore, Education Coordinator from the Oakhurst Community Garden, will open students' eyes to the wealth that surrounds us in the form of humble “weeds.” These neglected and criticized plants have so much to offer in the form of food and medicine. They will learn how to unlock the power of these plants for their own health and how to produce and market healing salves and tinctures. Students will also explore some of the aromatic herbs and their uses in foods and body care. Lastly, students will make herbal vinegar and some luscious bath salts as examples of ways to incorporate herbs into your life for pleasure and business.

 

Thursday, October 30th: In the Kitchen with Kemi Bennings

Eating healthy is a way of balancing the food you eat to keep your body strong, energized, and well nourished. This class will offer knowledge and education about nutrition, healthy eating habits and a hands-on opportunity to create tasty and healthy dishes in the kitchen. Kemi Bennings is the founder of Food For Thought Gourmet and her experience includes serving as a personal chef to Tyler Perry on the sets of Diary Of A Mad Black Woman and Madea’s Family Reunion.

 

 

 

Friday, October 31st: So So Fresh

Students will receive beats produced Rylan Kilgore, (aka TruthSpeaks) from the Dallas Austin Foundation, and work with singer/songwriter Mykel to write and record a track about their experiences from the week. Mykel was most recently featured on Nas’ new album and has worked with artists such as Erykah Badu, Cee-Lo, Stic Man of Dead Prez, Snoop Dog, Juvenile, Jeezy, Field Mob, and Big Gipp of Goodie Mob.
